Poised for Greatness – Team M6’s Sigmundsdottir & Mayer Rock at the Dubai Fitness ChampionshipsDANIEL PIERCE
Team Mission 6 athletes Sara Sigmundsdóttir of Iceland and Travis Mayer of Alpharetta, GA competed in a series of 12 events followed by a 3-part final this past Wednesday through Saturday at the Dubai Fitness Champioships. Going into Dubai, Sigmundsdóttir, fresh off a Team Europe win at the recent CrossFit Invitational in Canada, was one of the favorites to win. Mayer was looking to build upon the momentum from his 10th place finish at the 2016 CrossFit Games.
Sara battled Sam Briggs the entire way with Briggs taking advantage in the bike race and running events. Sigmundsdóttir prevailed in the barbell and cycling events. Briggs made a run at Sara on the last day with two event victories in the three-part final, but Sigmundsdóttir held her off to win $50,000. Briggs took 2nd place overall followed by Annie Thorisdottir.
It´d be an understatement to say that the route to winning this competition was a rocky one. On Thursday, Sara got food poisoning. “But when you watch a video of
The King Michael Jordan and see him play one of his best games with the flu –you of course make the same goal!” said Sigmundsdóttir on her Instagram.
Travis got off to a slow start finishing 32nd in the first WOD. He quickly rebounded taking 4th in the second and fourth events. He continued to build momentum from there, taking 3rd in the seventh event and 5th in the ninth event. He finished strong in the finals to take home $10,000 for 5th overall.
Mayer said, “Having a rough start to the weekend wasn’t what I hoped for, but I knew if I kept my mind clear and focused on each workout I could jump back up. There will always be struggles and adversity thrown at you so be as prepared as possible to keep growing and learning. This has me hungry and ready to attack Wodapolaza in a few weeks.”
Mission 6 CEO/Founder Jason Phillips said, “As a sponsor, friend and nutrition coach, I could not be happier to watch these two amazing athletes perform at the highest level. This is a great start to what I’m sure is going to be a very successful season!”
